The festival commemorates the victory of King Quang Trung who led Tay Son guerrilla forces from Hue to Ha Noi in early Spring of 1789 to defeat 20,000 Qing invaders.
Dong Da Park reportedly witnessed the fierce battles between King Quang Trung’s soldiers and the Chinese Qing army on the fifth day of the first lunar month.
The annual Dong Da festival started with incense offerings and processions in commemoration of King Quang Trung and followed by a series of cultural, artistic and sports activities as well as martial art performances depicting the victory.
The victory reflected the nation’s indomitable will and solidity and went down in national history as an epic of the struggle for national independence, which has continued ever since./.
