PM Phuc made the statement while welcoming IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee in Ha Noi on October 24.
The Government chief expressed his wish to continue close collaboration with the IPCC in improving the Southeast Asian country’s capacity in this fight through experience sharing and facilitating Vietnamese agencies, universities and institutions to join the panel’s research groups.
He also asked for the panel’s technical assistance for Viet Nam to better evaluate the impacts of climate change and to realize the Paris agreement to which Viet Nam is a signatory.
For his part, Mr. Hoesung Lee said he learned about the current situation and the strong determination of Viet Nam to cope with climate change during his productive seminar with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment this morning.
He suggested Viet Nam should update the IPCC’s recent assessments on global economic damages caused by climate change as they have increased four times compared to the previous reports.
The IPCC will strengthen international cooperation among scientists in general and with Viet Nam in particular, he said.
Established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Environment Program, the IPCC provides policy makers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of climate change options for adaptation and mitigation./.
