PM welcomes UN Under-Secretary Generals

VGP – The UN officials welcomed the Vietnamese Government’s initiative to coordinate with the UN to host the high-level Euro-Asia regional meeting on improving cooperation on transit, trade facilitation and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Tuesday met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States Gyan Chandra Acharya; Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Shamshad Akhtar; and Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Hongbu Wu.

The Government chief expressed his belief that the meeting would figure out specific measures to strengthen cooperation between transit and landlocked countries, thus making immense contributions to the realization of the UN-led millennium development goals.

As a transit and developing country, Viet Nam always cooperates closely with neighboring countries, especially landlocked Laos to ensure smooth transport and trade connectivity in the Mekong sub-region, said PM Phuc.

The country is also actively joining trans-national economic corridors, including the East-West Economic Corridor and the Southern Economic Corridor, and developing the Ha Noi-Vientiane highway to further facilitate ASEAN connectivity and enhance sustainable development in the region.

PM Phuc called for the UN’s continued support for the regional connectivity programs and projects and for Viet Nam to avoid middle-income trap and successfully achieve the millennium development goals.

The Government chief affirmed that Viet Nam attaches great importance to cooperation with the UN, hoping that the UN would continue promoting its role in maintaining global peace and security, accelerating respect for international law, and providing support for countries to successfully realize the Agenda 2030 and the Paris agreement on climate change.

The UN officials hailed Viet Nam’s proactive and effective contributions to the common work of the UN for peace, security and development across the world as well as the country’s efforts in fostering transit and trade facilitation in the region.

Both Shamshad Akhtar and Hongbu Wu spoke highly of Viet Nam’s contributions to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The UN officials also praised Viet Nam’s great achievements in socio-economic development its role and position in the international arena./.
