VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked for drastic measures to be taken to address the existing shortcomings in tourism, towards developing the industry into the country’s spearhead economic sector.

The PM made the request while presiding over the first-ever national conference on tourism development in central Quang Nam province’s Hoi An city on August 9.

He asked participants to focus on reassessing the importance of the tourism sector as well as its existing weaknesses, and discussing specific solutions to those problems, aiming to create a new impetus for tourism development.

The conference also needs to work out measures to mobilise the community in developing tourism and big tourism trademarks and building strong tourism businesses, PM Phuc noted.

He assigned the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to collect opinions from localities and enterprises to finalise the project to develop tourism into a spearhead economic sector and submit it to the Politburo this October.

As reported by the ministry, tourism contributed to 6.6% of Viet Nam’s GDP in 2015, created 2.25 million jobs and earned US$8.5 billion in export value.

However, the development of the sector still remained limited and had yet to meet the potential, advantages and expectations, the report said.
