PM meets with WTO Director-General

VGP – Viet Nam is always an active and responsible partner of the World Trade Organization (WTO), affirmed PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

PM Phuc made the point on April 15 in Ha Noi while meeting with WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo, the first leader of the global international organization to visit Viet Nam.  

“I appreciate your role in the multilateral trade system,” the Government leader said.

He also expressed his impression of the successful organization of the 9th and 10th WTO Ministerial Conferences which contributed to the feasible orientation for the Doha trade talks.

Mr. Phuc emphasized that during nearly ten-year membership (from January 11, 2007), Viet Nam has upheld its role in the WTO as an active and responsible member and proactively participated in and learned about fields of negotiations that fitted its competence.

Viet Nam, said the host leader, has already passed the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA). The Ministry of Science and Technology is about to sign the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and finalizing necessary procedures to submit it to the National Assembly for ratification.

Viet Nam always supports and believes in the WTO’s position in the international trade, affirmed Mr. Phuc.  

For his part, Mr. Roberto Azevedo said that he was delighted to visit Viet Nam as WTO General-Director and expressed his impression of Viet Nam’s socio-economic achievements.  

Viet Nam creates a definite success story of which trade contributed remarkably to national development, said the General-Director.

He took the occasion to thank Viet Nam for its assistance to the WTO and proposed the Southeast Asian nation to join an important agenda on e-commerce, SOEs, investment preference with a view to promoting the Doha talks.  

He expressed his hope for shaking hands with Viet Nam in manpower training in integration and international trade./.
