PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc made the request at a working session with the Steering Committee for the Central Highlands in Dak Lak province on June 20.
Mr. Phuc said that the region has an important strategic geopolitic position. The Party and State have spared no effort to support the region to eliminate poverty and build new rural areas. However, poverty eradication remained a main task of the Central Highlands region.
The Government chief called upon the region to promote its comparative advantages, especially rich soil and mild climate, and step up economic restructuring, particularly in the agricultural sector.
He proposed the five provinces, namely Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum extricate growth bottlenecks; focus on people and enterprises-central roles; handle land location as well as water supply.
PM Phuc also suggested regional localities study and propose amendments to their specific mechanisms to serve socio-economic development, promote the regional connectivity to create key products with high economic values, and expand exports to potential markets like Laos and Cambodia.
They were urged to pay more attention to improving their business and investment environment, increasing their competitive indexes, intensifying administrative reform and encouraging start-ups.
In the first half of this year, serious drought caused a loss of over VND 5.4 trillion (US$243 million) for the region’s agricultural production. The export market remained instable, and export turnover reported a decrease.
However, the region maintained a GRDP growth rate of 6% in comparison with the same period last year./.
