Indian PM announces new defense credit line for VN
VGP – Viet Nam and India have agreed to upgrade their strategic partnership, signed in 2007, to comprehensive strategic partnership, making India the third country to establish comprehensive strategic partnership with Viet Nam after Russia and China.

The news was released at the joint press briefing on Saturday between Vietnamese PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during the latter’s two-day official visit to Viet Nam.

The refreshed level of relationship will provide a new direction, momentum and substance to our future bilateral cooperation, according to the Indian PM.

Indian PM Modi said that the Viet Nam-India relationship spans 2000 years and “we came here with a message of peace which has endured”.

Mr. Modi announced a new defense credit of US$500 million for Viet Nam for facilitating deeper defense cooperation.

India will also offer US$5 million to help Viet Nam build a software park in Nha Trang city of Khanh Hoa province, Mr. Modi pledged.

On the occasion, the two countries inked 12 agreements ranging from health, space to celebration of the Friendship Year in 2017.

For multilateral aspect, the two PMs expressed their firm belief that deep and substantial cooperation between the two countries will contribute to strengthening ASEAN-India cooperation as well as peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.

PM Phuc said both sides agreed to further foster close coordination at regional and international forums, especially ASEAN and related mechanisms.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two PMs reaffirmed their resolve to continue cooperation in order to maintain peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of aviation and navigation in the East Sea.

Relevant parties need to peacefully settle disputes in the East Sea on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and respect diplomatic and legal processes./.
