At the meeting, PM Phuc warmly welcomed the U.S. President and the high-ranking delegation. Viet Nam attached the importance to the relations between Viet Nam and the U.S., said PM Phuc, hoping that the bilateral ties would flourish in a more practical and effective manner in the coming time.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his pleasure to meet PM Phuc and the dynamic and beautiful country of Viet Nam. The guest leader said that he was impressed by the sincere sentiments and warm welcome of local people in Da Nang and Ha Noi for the U.S. delegation.
The U.S., said Mr. Donald Trump, places the importance on the cooperative ties with Viet Nam and the role of the Southeast Asian nation in the region.
The two sides said they were satisfied with the developments in the bilateral relations after the US visit by PM Phuc in May 2017, particularly in the fields of politics-diplomacy, economics-trade, security-defense, and settlement of post-war consequences.
They agreed to strengthen relations on the basis of respecting the respective independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political systems, for the benefits of both peoples as well as peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and around the world.
The two leaders took the occasion to exchange specific measures to promote economic-trade-investment partnership, focusing on building a win-win cooperation framework, minimizing trade-investment disputes, and implementing more effectively signed economic deals.
Viet Nam has been improving the business environment and encouraging US companies to make investment in the country, said the host leader. He called for stronger coordination to address issues of mutual concern based on promoting trade for mutual benefits.
Mr. Phuc expressed his gratitude to the U.S. for opening its market for Viet Nam’s star apples and proposed the U.S. consider the import of Vietnamese mangoes and other fruits while simplifying import procedures of the catfish inspection program and soon launching a working group on Viet Nam’s market economy mechanism.
In reply, President Trump agreed to step up win-win economic-trade-investment cooperation with Viet Nam, and hailed Viet Nam’s effort in handling prioritized trade issues, such as the opening of its market for U.S. farm produce, industrial products, and information-technology products and services.
Regarding the regional situation, the two sides agreed to address disputes in the East Sea via peaceful means and in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), while respecting diplomatic and legal processes, implementing fully and effectively the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and soon signing a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.
The two leaders pledged to strengthen coordination at regional cooperation mechanisms, including the upcoming East Asia Summit in the Philippines.
President Trump affirmed that the U.S. will boost cooperation with Viet Nam to promote the bilateral comprehensive partnership in a more practical and effective fashion./.
