Action program on sustainable development in Mekong Delta approved

VGP – PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has recently inked Decision 417/QD-TTg in implementing the Government’s resolution 120/NQ-CP on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in response to climate change.
Setting six groups of tasks and solutions

The action program sets six groups of tasks and solutions including the revision, improvement and supplementation of mechanisms and policies on land to serve large-scale, highly competitive and sustainable agricultural goods production; supporting the application and transfer of science technology in agro-production; and developing urban and rural residential areas suitable with the conditions of each region. 

The PM requested an appropriate agricultural production structure focusing on aquaculture, fruit and rice along with developing the green and low-carbon emission industry, renewable energy and forestation, and preventing coastal erosion and landslides. 

The PM also urged the prevention of erosion and subsidence in coastal areas and river banks via reinforcing the sea dyke and irrigation systems, developing mangrove forests and building flood-proof houses.

Specific tasks 

By 2020, the action program targets to resolve coastal landslides; design large-scale investment projects in response to climate change.

In the 2021-2030 period, the program will implement approved projects; promote projects which require big expenditures; and expand successful modals of economic transformation in response to climate change.  

In the 2031-2050, the action program will implements programs and projects so that by 2050, the Mekong Delta Region will become a high-quality agricultural region with appropriate economic and infrastructure conditions in response to climate change, water resource conditions, and natural disasters.  

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment was assigned to work with the National Committee on Climate Change, provincial and municipal People’s Committees of Mekong Delta Region and HCMC to implement the action program./.
